Born in Columbia, South America, Clara immigrated with her family to California in 1964. Clara studied science and nursing and became certified as an EMT and phlebotomist. Clara’s work experience includes working as a bilingual (Spanish) receptionist for 11 specialty clinics at the Marion Davies Children’s Clinic at U.C.L.A., working at the hematology lab at the U.C.L.A. Medical Centre and working as a phlebotomist for the Medical Centre of Garden Grove, California. While living in California, Clara pursued additional studies in Disaster Services and was an active volunteer with the Red Cross Disaster Services. After moving to Salmon Arm in 1996, Clara continued her community service, volunteering with the Canadian Red Cross, the E.S.S. Emergency Support Services (Mobile Support Team for the Provincial Government), the Canadian Cancer Society (Relay for Life) and in a variety of volunteer positions with NOSBIS, culminating in her executive position on the Board of Directors of NOSBIS. Clara also works as a Community Care Aide at We Care, providing home support and palliative care.
